Oh dear - here we go...

So let me get this right, Google have stated that they are releasing a brand new Linux based OS branded after their current name ‘Chrome’. OK, but Chrome is not Chrome as in anything to do with Mozilla and its nothing to do with their current browser. So they are going to have two product’s called Chrome. I see, Ok.
Google Chrome has nothing to do with their current Linux OS Android – currently doing very well on mobile phones. No, this will be another NEW and COOL thing; Google will be supporting two Linux based OS’s and two products called Chrome but that will be cool right?

And this new OS won’t use X11, at all, just like Android, mmmn interesting. So it will theoretically be Linux but you won’t be able to run any of your current Linux apps on it. Neither will anything with a graphical interface that has already been written compile on it. So even though there are hundreds of Linux distros and they all (ones with a GUI) pretty much use X11, this one with give us just what we need – more choice. Ok, I think I am seeing a picture gather.
I can say for one, that I am not holding my breath. I think that Android served more of a purpose than this, this is a painful shame and I am sorry to say a waste of resource straight out of the ‘Not made here Dept’ or 'How wonderful, more Linux fragmentation - I mean choice!'.

This reminds me of gOS (http://www.thinkgos.com/index.html) which many people thought meant Google OS until they cleared it up because once it was up and running it gave you instant access to a suit of mostly Google applications. But this is like the version that is being made inside the company this time. gOS used Enlightenment E17, and the rest of the X11/GNU/Linux – Debian stack. I could easily find that program that runs on Ubuntu and install it, I’m away! But no the company famous for needing even their receptionists to have a degree – Google, the company with the people so smart they even spelled the name wrong – say no, we won’t support all of that and actually get all the bugs out lock it down and allow our users to plug into the incredible ecosystem of thousands of already developed apps, no, we want to be more like Apple, but a web based Apple. A Wapple as it were, that doesn’t seem so pure from a company with the motto “do no evil” – Ever read Animal Farm – remember how it ends?

So, no I am not looking forward to what I have seen of Chrome OS so far, I still really need to have explained to me what the point in all of it is. Maybe, some exec will come up and say – the World really needs Chrome – the OS, not the browser or the Mozilla runtime or the hub plates because …… And I might say Ahhh! Brilliant, now I’m really excited! I’m open for that I really am. But at the moment – they have single handedly confused the whole tech world. What comes to mind is the stories that were circulating a couple of weeks ago about Google execs ridiculing Microsofts latest search engine efforts (Google Mocks Bing from the Register). I foresee ‘what goes around comes around’.
